Product photography for electronic or digital items

Electronic or digital products are one of the most popular items nowadays for product photography. With e-commerce explosion, more and more demands are arising for electronic/digital goods photos. The reason is simple enough: many young people are hi-tech and cyber-geek, they grow up with electronic/digital products, and they tend to compare and shop online for these items: computers, mouse, speakers, headphones, cell phones, mobile covers, MP3, MP4 etc.

When a product photographer gets an order for electronic/digital product photography, first of all, he has to think about how to shoot it and express its functions with the picture. For example, we are going to shoot a laptop this time. Shooting laptop or computer is interesting for a product photographer, as there are many interesting or unique parts on the product surface that can be caught. In addition, a modern digital camera can help the photographer better control the depth of field/focus for the shooting.

Firstly, we need to decide how to demonstrate the laptop’s functions: should we focus on its surface, or catch one of its inner parts for shooting? We may just capture part of its exterior and part of its interior, and then combine them into an original and creative photo. However, if the client prefers to see the whole notebook in the picture, we will have to think about how to lay out the composition, the background, the props and what kind of lighting will be best for the assignment.

Secondly, lighting is critical in shooting a complete notebook. The surface of an electronic/digital product is very appealing for consumers, but it is a difficult subject for an electronic product photographer. For example, the computer screen is very reflective; the professional product photographer must find a way to prevent the reflection of light during the shooting process.

Thirdly, some customers may want one or more models to be included in the picture to show a live setting. In this case, the photographer must take different factors into account when arranging the models in the photo, so that the models are not distracting the viewer’s attention from the product.  The key is to highlight the electronic/digital product with the support of the models.
